Home & Yard

Create a Ticke-Safe-Zone through landscaping

You can make yard less attractive to ticks depending on how to landscape. Here are some simple landscaping techniques that can help reduce tick populations

  • Clear tall grasses and brush around homes and at the edge of lawns.
  • Place a 3-ft wide barrier of wood chips or gravel between lawns and wooded areas and around patios and play equipment. This will restrict tick migration into recreational areas.
  • Mow the lawn frequently and keep leaves raked.
  • Stack wood neatly and in a dry area (discourages rodents that ticks feed on).
  • Keep playground equipment, decks, and patios away from yard edges and trees and place them in a sunny location, if possible.
  • Remove any old furniture, mattresses, or trash from the yard that may give ticks a place to hide.
  • Refer to the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station’s Tick Management Handbook[PDF – 8.53 MB] for a comprehensive guide to preventing ticks and their bites through landscaping.

Essential oils are used in combination or alone as an effective and nontoxic method to repel ticks from the yard.

Lavender, sage, lemongrass and thyme can each be mixed with water and sprayed directly onto the grass.

The spray is also an effective method for keeping ticks off your pets; just pay attention to your dog’s or cat’s reaction. Cats are especially sensitive to stronger, undiluted odors, so use the spray cautiously if your pets spend most of their time outdoors.

Reapply the essential oil in the yard as needed after a heavy rainfall.

To use it, simply place Damminix Tick Tubes® in areas around your yard where mice frolic. That’s it. Mice will do the rest for you by gathering the cotton to build nests in their burrows. Young ticks feeding on the mice are killed by the insecticide before they can spread Lyme Disease to you, your family and your pets.

Each mouse nesting with Damminix Tick Tubes® can kill hundreds of ticks each season. Studies have shown that Damminix Tick Tubes® actually reduces the risk of exposure to an infected tick by up to 97% on a treated property. Now, you can Take Back the Outdoors!

Damminix Tick Tubes® reduce the risk of Lyme Disease by using mice as “couriers” to kill disease carrying deer ticks.
